Impulsive Volcanic Plumes Generate Volcanic Lightning and Vent Discharges: A Statistical Analysis of Sakurajima Volcano in 2015

چکیده
The origin of electrical activity accompanying volcanic ash plumes is an area heightened interest in volcanology. However, it unclear how intense eruption needs to be produce lightning flashes as opposed “vent discharges,” which represent the smallest scale activity. This study targets 97 carefully monitored <3 km high from Sakurajima volcano Japan, June 1 7, 2015. We use multiparametric measurements sensors including a nine-station mapping array and infrared camera characterize plume ascent. Findings demonstrate that impulsive, velocity (>55 m/s) were most likely create vent discharges, whereas occurred with volume flux. identified conditions where without detectable highlighting their independent source mechanisms. Our results imply dynamics govern charging for lightning, while characteristics explosion control discharges.

Atmospheric chemistry in volcanic plumes.
Recent field observations have shown that the atmospheric plumes of quiescently degassing volcanoes are chemically very active, pointing to the role of chemical cycles involving halogen species and heterogeneous reactions on aerosol particles that have previously been unexplored for this type of volcanic plumes. Key features of these measurements can be reproduced by numerical models such as th...
متن کاملUncertainty analysis of a model of wind-blown volcanic plumes
Mathematical models of natural processes can be used as inversion tools to predict unobserved properties from measured quantities. Uncertainty in observations and model formulation impact on the efficacy of inverse modelling. We present a general methodology, history matching, that can be used to investigate the effect of observational and model uncertainty on inverse modelling studies. We demo...

The study subvolcanic intrusion, comprising syenodiorite, monzonite and quartz-monzonite, is cropped out in Talkh-rud valley located in the northeast of Damavand volcano flank. This sub-volcanic intrusion possesses porphyritic texture and consists of plagioclase, alkali feldspars, phelogopite, amphibole, clinopyroxene, apatite and titanomagnetite. Evidences of disequilibrium such as zoning and ...
متن کاملMonitoring and forecasting Etna volcanic plumes
In this paper we describe the results of a project ongoing at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV). The objective is to develop and implement a system for monitoring and forecasting volcanic plumes of Etna. Monitoring is based at present by multispectral infrared measurements from the Spin Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager on board the Meteosat Second Generation geosynch...
متن کاملGalileo Observations of Volcanic Plumes on Io
Co-analysis of Galileo imaging observations of the gas and dust components of Io’s plumes suggests that the deposits produced by Prometheus-type plumes are made up of pyroclastic particles that are entrained with the gas flow. Peletype plumes, in contrast, deposit material that could be condensed from the gas phase. Introduction: Many outstanding questions remain to be answered about Io’s spect...
